The Prowler is an alias used by several fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics . These characters are primarily depicted as wearing a green and purple battle suit with a cape and clawed gauntlets. Created by writer Stan Lee and artists John Buscema and Jim Mooney , the character was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #78 (November 1969); a 13-year-old John Romita Jr. came up with the character's name and costume, although only the name was ultimately kept. In the mainstream Marvel Universe , the first and most notable iteration of the Prowler is Hobart "Hobie" Brown, a African-American teenage genius who created the Prowler technology originally a petty thief and adversary to the superhero Spider-Man , and has since become a viable ally of the original web-slinger, as well as a superhero in his own right.
