Hawkins is a fictional small midwestern town located in Roane County in the state of Indiana with an estimated population of 30,000. Prior to 1983, Hawkins was a largely quiet and uneventful town. The last person to be reported missing prior to 1983 was in the summer of 1923, while the last suicide was in fall 1961. The greatest point of interest was the secretive Hawkins National Laboratory , one of several national laboratories which grew out of the scientific endeavors of World War II. Unknown to the residents of the town, the lab was contributing to the controversial government program known as MKUltra . In November 1983, during experiments at the laboratory, a gate was accidentally opened to an alternate dimension , allowing a predatory creature to enter Hawkins. The monster abducted residents and brought them to the Upside Down. Among its victims were Will Byers , who was brought home after a week, and Barbara Holland , who was killed in the Upside Down. Dustin Henderson , portrayed by   Gaten Matarazzo , is a major protagonist in the first three seasons of   Stranger Things . He is best friends with   Mike Wheeler ,   Lucas Sinclair   ,   Eleven ,   Will Byers , and   Max Mayfield . Dustin is an observer and a protector of the unity within the friend group. He frequently resolved the conflicts within the group by drawing their attention to what was going on around them. He had a neutral, level-headed approach to  Eleven  and the supernatural events unfolding around them; in some ways, he was a negotiator between the open-minded  Mike  and the skeptical  Lucas . Dustin is also the most scientifically inclined of the group (despite his love of fantasy) and may be the most intelligent of the quartet- notwithstanding his bad judgement in keeping  Dart  as a pet, although even this unexpectedly saved the group in the end. The  Demogorgon , also known as the Monster, was a predatory humanoid creature that entered  Hawkins ,  Indiana  in  November 1983 . The creature originated from the parallel dimension known as the  Upside Down . When  Eleven , a psychic test subject from  Hawkins National Laboratory , made interdimensional contact with it, a  gate  between dimensions opened at the lab. The creature passed through, terrorizing Hawkins for approximately a week. It abducted various residents and took them back to the Upside Down, usually killing them. The friends and family of  Will Byers , one of the Demogorgon's victims, slowly began to uncover the truth about the creature, with the help of the escaped Eleven.
