James P. Sullivan or Sulley   is a 7 foot 8 inch (234cm), blue-fur and purple spotted   bear -like monster, with a humanoid face, devilish horns, dark blue eyebrows, a visible nose of that of a   big cat , and the same color of his eyebrows, muscular limbs, arms that are longer than his legs razor-sharp claws on his hands and toes, a   reptilian -like tail, dorsal spikes running down his neck, back, and tail, and   feline -like fangs. Even though he excels at scaring children, he is kindhearted, thoughtful and affects a relaxed, amiable personality. In the film's beginning, he is "The Best Scarer" for several months running. Monsters University  depicts the college-age Sulley as a talented but lazy student whose father Bill had made a name for himself as a proficient Scarer. It is later discovered that Randall has an ulterior motive: he and his long-suffering assistant Jeff Fungus build and operate a large vacuum-like machine dubbed the Scream Extractor, that is capable of collecting the screams of human children that he has captured by extracting their pneunothoraxes , thus asphyxiating their victims and collaborates with Waternoose at sav...

In Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University , Mike is depicted as a proud monster. Mike had a lonesome childhood and struggled to make friends. On a class field trip to Monsters, Inc., Mike was inspired to become a scarer professionally, but other students made fun of him because he was perceived as undeniably "unscary". Even so, Mike was accepted into Monsters University's scare program, where he was introduced to James P. Sullivan in a SCARE 101 class. Mike initially disliked Sulley for his arrogance and bad work ethic. This dislike escalated into a major disruption made in class which resulted in Mike and Sulley's expulsion from the scare program.
