A wand (sometimes magic wand) is a thin, hand-held stick or rod made of wood , stone , ivory , or metals like gold or silver . Generally, in modern language, wands are ceremonial and/or have associations with magic but there have been other uses, all stemming from the original meaning as a synonym of rod and virge , both of which had a similar development. A stick giving length and leverage is perhaps the earliest and simplest of tools. Gryffindor  is one of the four  Houses  of  Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry , founded by  Godric Gryffindor . Godric instructed the sorting hat to choose a few particular characteristics he most values. Such character traits of students  Sorted  into Gryffindor are courage, chivalry, and determination. The emblematic animal is a  lion , and its colours are scarlet and gold. Sir  Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington , also known as "Nearly Headless Nick" is the house ghost. Gryffindor corresponds roughly to the element of  fire , and it is for that reason that the colours scarlet and gold were chosen to represent the House. The snowy owl (binomial name Bubo scandiacus) is a large owl of the typical   owl   family Strigidae. It is very recognisable due to its white feathers, yellow eyes and black beak. It is one of the largest species of   owl   and in   North America   is on average the heaviest owl species.
