Chewbacca , nicknamed "Chewie", is a fictional character in the  Star Wars  franchise. He is a  Wookiee , a tall, hirsute biped and intelligent species from the planet  Kashyyyk . Chewbacca is the loyal friend and associate of  Han Solo , and serves as co-pilot on Solo's spaceship, the  Millennium Falcon . Chewbacca is portrayed by actor  Peter Mayhew  in the Star Wars saga films, with  Joonas Suotamo  serving as a body double in  The Force Awakens  and  The Last Jedi  and later took over the role in the  upcoming, as yet untitled Han Solo movie . AT-ST drivers, also called AT-ST pilots, were Imperial Army combat drivers specialized in operating the All Terrain Scout Transport . Largely pulled from the human species , two AT-ST pilots were trained to be primarily responsible for keeping an AT-ST walker moving at speed through uneven terrain, utilizing its offensive capabilities for reconnaissance and anti-personnel hunting missions. AT-ST pilots wore one-piece light grey jumpsuits with basic armor plating underneath and Imperial crests on both shoulders. The drivers' feet were protected by a pair of calf-high black boots , and their hands by fire -resistant black gauntlets . The belt that came with the jumpsuit was made of a black, leather -like material, with a metallic buckle featuring an identity disk . AT-ST pilots wore a field grey open-face helmet consisting of a dome with a rim and a helmet skirt. The  AT-ST  is a two-legged  digitigrade  walker introduced in The Empire Strikes Back and featured extensively in Return of the Jedi. Due to their design and movement, they are often dubbed " chicken walkers ". The name Scout Walker is also used to refer to an AT-ST.
