Solo: A Star Wars Story, or simply Solo, is a 2018 American space Western film based on the Star Wars character Han Solo. Directed by Ron Howard, it was produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the second Star Wars anthology film following 2016's Rogue One. The plot takes place prior to the events of A New Hope, and explores the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca, as the pair are involved in a heist within the criminal underworld and meet a young Lando Calrissian. The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, alongside Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.

Han Solo is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. Han is a pilot from the planet Corellia, who is depicted as the second owner of the Millennium Falcon after winning the ship from Lando Calrissian in events prior to the films. In the original film trilogy, Han pilots the Falcon, along with his Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca, whereby both pilots became involved in the Rebel Alliance's struggle against the Galactic Empire. During the course of the Star Wars narrative, Han becomes a chief figure in the Alliance and succeeding galactic governments. In the sequel trilogy Han is portrayed as the husband of Princess Leia Organa and the father of fallen Jedi, Ben Solo, who, after falling to the dark side of the Force, became Kylo Ren. Harrison Ford portrayed Han in the original Star Wars trilogy as well as the first film in the sequel trilogy. Alden Ehrenreich portrays a young Han Solo as the titular protagonist in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Creator of the franchise George Lucas described the character as "a loner who realizes the importance of being part of a group and helping for the common good".

Chewbacca, nicknamed "Chewie", is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. He is a Wookiee, a tall, hirsute biped and intelligent species from the planet Kashyyyk. Chewbacca is the loyal friend and first mate of Han Solo, and serves as co-pilot on Solo's spaceship, the Millennium Falcon. Within the films of the main saga, Chewbacca is portrayed by Peter Mayhew from episodes III to VII (Mayhew shares the role with his body double Joonas Suotamo on Episode VII). Suotamo took over the role alone in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and reprised the role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. The character has also appeared on television, books, comics, and video games.
